Three cases of bacterial meningitis were reported to the Eastern Health Board last week

Three cases of bacterial meningitis were reported to the Eastern Health Board last week. It is understood that none were fatal. There were a further three cases of viral meningitis (which is not usually life threatening), 19 cases of gastro enteritis, four cases of mumps, two salmonellosis, one whooping cough, one malaria, one dysentery and one case of infectious mononucleosis.

A spokesman said there was nothing unusual in the number of cases, and the incidence of bacterial meningitis was usually higher in winter and spring.
