54 die as bus plunges off bridge in Tanzania

An overloaded bus plunged off a bridge and into a river gorge in northern Tanzania today, killing 54 people and injuring 20 more, police said.

The bus crashed into the Malala river 15 miles east of Mount Kilimanjaro, Regional Police Commander Balilo Matei said.

The bus was overloaded and it was not clear why it drove off the bridge, he added.
