Bomb disposal experts yesterday defused a car bomb left outside a courthouse in New Street, Newry. The device was packed into the boot of a Nissan Bluebird. A telephone warning was given.

An RUC spokesman confirmed last night that the device contained 500lbs of home-made explosives.

On Sunday, the RUC defused a 1,400lb bomb discovered in a builder's trailer abandoned by the roadside in Co Armagh. Police linked the bomb to dissident republican groups associated with the 32-County Sovereignty Committee.
