Five Lebanese soldiers were killed when their patrol came under attack in the eastern Bekaa Valley today, security sources said, in an incident probably linked to tensions between local tribes and the army.

The attack, on the Reyaq-Baalbek highway, was likely to have been carried out by Lebanese seeking revenge for members of their tribes, the sources said. The army has cracked down on tribesmen in recent weeks for various crimes.

The sources said four men had ambushed the patrol by firing a rocket-propelled grenade and then firing machine guns.

One of the five dead soldiers was an officer, the sources said.
