Over 400 drivers were arrested for alleged drunk driving over the Easter bank holiday weekend, according to Garda figures.

Provisional figures released by the Garda press office show 441 such offences recorded between April 6th and April 9th inclusive.

Some 427 alleged drink-driving offences were recorded by the force from April 2nd to April 8th, an increase of more than 8 per cent on the previous week's figure of 394.

In a statement, the Garda press office said speed was the single greatest cause of death and injury on the roads.

"Allocation of resources to Garda Traffic Corps is continuing to increase thereby affording further opportunity to tackle this problem. Such enforcement is now increasing significantly," the statement said.
