Jolo - Four civilians have been killed in fighting in the southern Philippines where the military kept up a relentless assault for a third day yesterday on Muslim rebels holding 19 hostages, the government said.

Manila rejected calls for a ceasefire or for resumed negotiations with the Abu Sayyaf rebels for the hostages.
