PORT-AU-PRINCE - President Rene Preval of Haiti yesterday appealed for calm after mounting violence that has left at least 37 people dead and many others wounded, including a senator.

On Tuesday, a policeman was shot dead in a suburb of the capital. His death brought to six the number of policemen killed recently.
