At least 28 people have been arrested and brought to the Clover Hill detention centre where they were due to appear before a special court sitting last night.

The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern said he was "disappointed" with last night's confrontation and said he was happy with the way in which the protests were handled by the Garda.

The Minister for Justice, Mr McDowell was also "kept briefed" on the situation in Dublin , according to a Government spokesperson.

"I am disappointed that the disturbances happened," the Taoiseach said. "I am happy with the way the Garda Siochana have handled the situation."

The Government spokesperson said that while the Army remain on a high state of alert it has not been deployed.
