Twenty-seven former and serving inmates at Mountjoy jail are due in court over the next few weeks after they were charged with rioting.

The prisoners barricaded themselves in to a basement recreation centre on July 12th last year, broke into adjacent workshops and caused over €100,000 worth of damage.

Five prison officers and two prisoners were taken to hospital during the stand-off.

A Garda spokesman said: “There is a total of 27 people who will be brought before the courts from Tuesday onwards in relation to the riot last year.”

A total of 19 of those to be charged are still in custody. They are due to be taken from prison in groups and brought before the courts over the next two weeks.
