Eleven prison officers and two prisoners were treated for smoke inhalation after an outbreak of fire at Maghaberry prison, near Lisburn, Co Antrim, yesterday. Up to 100 prisoners were evacuated to an exercise yard.

The fire, believed to have been started deliberately in a cell, was extinguished within 15 minutes.

On Thursday night, an 86-year-old woman living alone in an isolated area near Clough, Co Down, was attacked and robbed by three masked men who broke into her home.

The intruders tied the woman up and threatened to shoot her and burn down her house unless she gave them money. She handed over two £10 sterling notes and they fled across the fields.
