Rio De Janeiro - A Fire killed 12 children aged one to three who were left alone in a room at a Brazilian day-care centre yesterday and were found huddled together, police said.

The fire started in early afternoon and destroyed the room where some of the youngest children rested at the day-care centre in Uruguaiana, in south Brazil. "The heater somehow caught fire and killed the children who were huddled together and hugging each other when they died," Lt Col Renato Bortoluzzi of the military police said. Investigators have not determined what sparked the fire., but said the children were unattended during their nap period.
