A woman (61)* has died following a single-vehicle road collision in Co Cork on Monday.

The woman was fatally injured when the car collided with a wall on a minor road in the Dunkettle Ballinglanna area just east of the main Cork-Dublin motorway at around 1.50pm.

The emergency services were called and the woman – who was from the local area – was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a postmortem.

Gardaí closed the road and put diversions in place to allow a Garda Forensic Collision Investigators examine the scene.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.

Any road users with camera footage who were travelling in the area between 1.30pm and 2.10pm on Monday are asked to share this by contacting Mayfield Garda Station on 021 4558510.

Investigations are ongoing.

The woman’s death is the second fatality on roads in the Glanmire area within five days. The crash follows the death of Billy O’Grady (22) from Shanballymore who was fatally injured in a single vehicle collision on Junction 18 at the Glanmire turn-off on the M8 last Wednesday.

The crash happened around 7am as Mr O’Grady was driving down the southbound carriage of the M8. He was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he died from his injuries later that day.

Local GAA clubs were among those to pay tribute to Mr O’Grady with Shanballymore GAA posting on social media that it was with “deep sadness and sorrow” that they learned of the untimely death of their club player and friend.

“A young man of great character and presence who was a credit to his family and our club. Our focus remains on remembering Billy as a player, friend, and clubmate and supporting his family over this most difficult time in their lives,” the statement added.

Meanwhile St Dominic’s GAA club, which is an amalgamation of underage players from Glanworth and Shanballymore GAA, said that the death of their former player had shocked the whole community.
