Members of the 2nd Leinsters at rest in camp during the Battle of Passchendaele. Officers often wrote letters to the relatives of soldiers who were killed, praising the soldier regardless of the reality of his service or his death. One proud woman published a letter written to her by an officer of the 9th Royal Irish Rifles. The officer later wrote to his father: ‘My blood ran cold when I saw the balls I wrote Mrs Hill in print.’ (Courtesy of the Imperial War Museum, Q 6186)
