Tullanisk on the outskirts of Birr, Co Offaly, is a well-known house not just because it is the dower property to the nearby castle, but also thanks to Mr and Mrs George Gossip, who for the past decade have been living there and welcoming paying guests. Now the house's contents are being sold by Mealy's and the 600-odd lots include a wide variety of interesting items, such as lot 294, an 18th-century gilt pier, or wall mirror, and lot 317, a late 18th-century three-fold leather screen; these carry estimates of £1,200-£1,800 and £800-£1,200 respectively.

Lot 470 is a handsome Georgian mahogany bureau cabinet of the kind which never fails to find plenty of bidders (£2,000-£3,000), as do pieces similar to lot 609, seen on the right of this picture. A large 19th-century gilt gesso overmantel, it is expected to fetch £400-£700.

To be held on the premises next Tuesday, the sale begins at 10.30 a.m.
