The yen hit seven-year lows against the dollar yesterday as sterling recovered on global foreign exchange markets. Investors, worried about Japan's ailing economy, the crisis in Indonesia and the possibility of an US interest rate rise, drove the yen down.

The failure of the G8 summit at the weekend to give new leads for dealing with Asia's economic problems also hit sentiment.
