WESTINGHOUSE Electric Corp agreed to sell its defence and electronic systems unit to Northrop Grumman Corp for $3 billion (£1.87 billion) cash, the two companies said yesterday. The sale will allow Westinghouse to quickly pay down the debt from its $5.4 billion acquisition of CBS broadcasting.

The sale price is above analysts' estimates of the value of the unit of about $2 billion.
