Volkswagen, the German car-maker, has launched a counterattack against the European Commission with a legal challenge against record fines imposed on the company in January.

In a suit filed to the European Court of First Instance (CFI), Volkswagen denies that its Italian dealers adopted anti-competitive sales practices and argues that the Commission did not have the right to fine the company £80.4 million.
