Ulster Bank confirmed yesterday it had begun discussions with the Irish Bank Officials' Association on a new pay and grading structure.

It denied that pay cuts were on the cards. "Rather, the intention is to provide for competitive salary scales and a logical structure for staff promotion," it said in a statement.

The IBOA was unavailable for comment.
