Lawyer Rose Hynes has been appointed by the Government as the chairman of Shannon Airport Authority (SAA) plc, a State-owned entity that will oversee the separation of the Co Clare airport from the Dublin Airport Authority.

SAA will be merged with the landbank of Shannon Development in the first half of 2013 into a new entity that will be responsible for the airport and the rent roll from the adjoining industrial estate. Ms Hynes will chair this entity when it is formed.

The Bord Gáis chairman led one of two task forces that advised the Government recently on its options for Shannon Airport and Shannon Development.

Her appointment to this role was agreed by the Cabinet on Tuesday.

A number of board members are expected to be appointed within days, while the position of chief executive for the new entity will shortly be advertised.
