Technology stocks came back to life on Wall Street yesterday as shares of Lucent Technologies jumped on a report that the company was considering spinning off its microelectronics unit.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 26.87 to close at 10,714.82.

Broader stock indicators also rose.

The Standard and Poor's 500 index rose 8.10 to 1,478.64, and the Nasdaq composite index was up 48.32 at 3,845.73.

Declining issues barely edged out advancing issues on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 988.73 million shares, up from 925.04 million shares on Wednesday.

The Russell 2000 index was down 3.78 at 509.98.
