Western Digital My Passport Studio, $199.99

External hard drives do not usually fall into the category of “desirable technology”, but Western Digital’s latest offering, My Passport Studio, adds something you never knew you needed: an LCD screen. This simple addition makes it easy to see what is on the drive.

It can be password protected and set to back up important files automatically. The drive, which ranges in capacity from 320GB to 640GB, is formatted for Macs but can be reformatted for Windows.

Canon EOS 550D, €899 (body only)

The 550D is a welcome update to Canon’s ever-growing range of digital SLRs. The 18-megapixel camera takes some of the features Canon has been loading into its more expensive models – the ability to capture full HD video clips, wide-ranging ISO settings and advanced metering systems – and crams them into a lightweight, compact body. The autofocus system has also been improved.

Seecode Vision, €99.99

The new Seecode Vision is a fully integrated in-car hands-free kit that you can install yourself. The device synchronises with your mobile contacts and displays the incoming caller’s name on a large screen.

The kit can be paired with two phones, allowing them to be active at the same time, and will give you up to 10 hours of talk time and 200 hours in standby. One of the best things about it is its flexibility. You can move it from car to car and it has three mounting options so you can put it where you want.
