Sweden should join Europe's currency union when political and economic conditions justify the step, and will probably be a member within five years, leaders of Sweden's governing Social Democrats said yesterday.

While declining to set a timetable for the step, Prime Minister Mr Goran Persson sent a strong positive signal on euro membership to the country's sceptical public, saying he personally backed the idea and believed voters would as well.
