MR Cedric Brown, the much-criticised chief executive of British Gas, stepped down yesterday after a turbulent four years which saw the rapid introduction of competition in British gas markets. Mr Brown had to cope with increasing industry competition while the former monopoly supplier was restricted by tough regulation. He attracted strong criticism for taking a 75 per cent pay rise, and then became the centre of a row over executive pay at privatised utilities.
