Stronger dollar cuts DAX losses

The Frankfurt stock market lost ground as the DAX index finished the day at 3731.08 points, down 0.57 per cent from the Monday close. But the indicator cut its losses late in the session thanks to the dollar's firmer tone, traders said.

The dollar was fixed at 1.7062 deutschmarks in Frankfurt though it had traded below DM1.70 earlier in the day.

It had been fixed at DM1.7166 on Monday.

The Frankfurt bond market was little changed, and the average yield on government issues was up by 0.01 of a point from Monday to 5.31 per cent.

Italian shares closed unchanged after another lacklustre session dominated by the reluctance of investors to take fresh positions in the market while the possibility remains of further turmoil in Asian and Latin American markets.
