Stocks take heart from US opening

German shares ended more than 1 per cent firmer after an afternoon rally on the back of a firmer Wall Street and dollar recovery from its overnight losses.

Dealers say allegations surrounding President Clinton will continue to dominate attention, with the DAX taking its lead from the US markets.

Paris CAC-40: 3000.47 (+34.32)

French shares finished a touch above 3,000 as operators followed the latest development in the scandal shaking the White House.

A broker said Paris stocks took heart from the Dow gaining 50 points and the dollar which had perked up on the day.

Milan Mibtel: 18,237 (+48)

Italian shares closed higher, lifted by recovery of US stocks on Wall Street and the dollar after President Clinton's denial of alleged sexual improprieties.

Banca Nazionale del Lavoro shares rose 9.4 per cent to 37,050 lire after the government said late on Friday it plans to privatise the bank by the end of the year.
