THE theory of a "stakeholder economy" in which employees, customers and suppliers take their places in the running of a company alongside shareholders - was yesterday dismissed by British institutional investors.

While other groups' needs should be recognised, the long term interests of shareholders "must be paramount", according to the National Association of Pension Funds.
