Birmingham Midshires, the mutual building society that is strongly rumoured to be in takeover talks with Royal Bank of Scotland, yesterday announced a £460 million mortgage book acquisition.

The society, Britain's fifth largest, said it was buying the commercial mortgage portfolio from UCB Bank.
