TWO IRISH charities working in Haiti have pulled off a coup this weekend by securing former US president Bill Clinton as a speaker for a fundraising breakfast in the Four Season’s Hotel in Ballsbridge, Dublin, on Sunday.

The event is being hosted jointly by Michael Carey, as head of the Soul of Haiti foundation, and Leslie Buckley, founder of Haven, which has built housing in the impoverished state.

They hope the Clinton event will raise more than €100,000.

Mr Clinton has a keen interest in Haiti, holding the title of UN special envoy to the country, and has namechecked the Irish charities in the past.

About 300 people are expected, including Denis O’Brien, whose mobile phone group Digicel is the biggest telco in Haiti.
