Global electrical engineering group ABB Asea Brown Boveri Ltd reported first-quarter net profit growth on the low side of market estimates but said orders had developed well despite a slowdown in Asia. ABB said net profit rose 9 per cent from the same quarter of 1997 to $258 million (£184 million), below average estimates of around $265 million. Sales were down 7 per cent to $6.513 billion.
