Procter & Gamble yesterday said its chief executive was stepping down after only 17 months at the helm of the largest US household products maker as it warned investors of disappointing earnings for the second quarter in a row.

The surprise departure of Mr Durk Jager (57), who was also chairman and president, marks the culmination of months of turmoil at the group.
