The Hong Kong businessman who recently bought English Premiership soccer club Portsmouth has bought a 5 per cent stake in a bank in Latvia, it said yesterday.

Rietumu Bank, in which financier Dermot Desmond is a 33 per cent shareholder, said Balram Chainrai bought the stake in February. That month he also became the fourth owner of Portsmouth this season.
