Pfizer chief to retire

Pfizer, the world's No. 2 drug maker, said yesterday that its chief executive Mr William Steere (64), will retire on January 1st, 2001 and be replaced by Mr Henry McKinnell, the company's president, who led the recently completed acquisition of rival Warner-Lambert.

The move had been expected by Wall Street analysts who said the transition would be smooth.
