Background: Born in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, he trained as a chartered accountant. He then worked with Noritake, the Japanese pottery company in Arklow, later joining Penn Aluminum International. In 1983 he joined Murphy's brewery later becoming managing director until 1993. He then became president and chief executive officer of Heineken USA.

Marital Status: Married to Noirin; they have three children

Why is in the news?: He became group chief executive on September 11th and this week presented the company's results for 1999. He is expected to play a key role in the flotation.
