German shares ended higher in quiet trading boosted by Wall Street's late gains from Thursday

German shares ended higher in quiet trading boosted by Wall Street's late gains from Thursday. Traders said the good performance was due mainly to a firmer dollar and bond market, but trading volume was on the weak side.

French stocks ended fractionally higher as a fall on Wall Street eroded early gains from selective buying in a market where much of the trading was linked to the expiry of the May futures contract.

Italian stocks ended slightly higher in fairly thin trading.
