Paris CAC-40: 4095.03 (-82.28)

Almost 2 per cent was wiped off Paris stocks as a day of worries over Wall Street, and weak yen took its toll on the bourse. More than 2 per cent was wiped off the market at the opening. Although the slide slowed briefly mid-afternoon, lingering unease over weak Asian markets and uncertainty over the Dow's direction are likely to lead to further losses, some brokers predicted.

Italian stocks closed weaker but above their lows, tracking a weak opening on Wall Street as weakness continued to spook investors. Bank shares managed to shine in a generally lacklustre bourse.
