German blue chip shares ended trade with losses of more than 2 per cent as another tumble in Hong Kong, a weaker Dow and the dollar's drop to five-month lows dragged the market lower. Analysts said the market remained fragile and lacking in confidence, with the Far East continuing to cast a shadow.

French shares recovered some of their early losses but closed sharply lower as investors feared a renewed Asian shares crisis, traders said. French cash markets will be closed on Monday and Tuesday for the Armistice holiday.

Italian shares took a pounding after Wall Street's early fall, with worries over the Asian economies fuelling the negative sentiment.
