A cautious tone was present in the German market with the IBIS DAX well below the day's best level. Many dealers were unwilling to get involved ahead of the weekend. The strong dollar and neutral CPI data provided some support.

Paris CAC-40: 2849.03 (-7.84)

The weaknesses on Wall Street meant earlier gains were eroded. Sales of stock to square positions at the end of the October account and caution ahead of the weekend added to the downward pressure, brokers said.

Milan Mibtel: 15,698 (-103)

Italian shares reversed early gains to end lower after Wall Street took a turn for the worse, reviving nervousness about Far East markets. "In view of the weekend, people decided to close long positions opened late on Thursday," said one dealer.
