Frankfurt DAX: 4061.50 (-56.72)

The Frankfurt fell sharply as Wall Street posted heavy early losses for the second successive day. September industrial production figures in the US came in substantially ahead of forecasts while the capacity utilisation figures also came in ahead of forecasts.

Paris CAC-40: 2958.02 (-34.58)

French shares closed over 1per cent down in line with the losses on Wall Street. The market was depressed by US economic data coming in above forecast. There were some heavy losses in selected blue-chips with Cap Gemini down almost 5 per cent.

The Italian market closed sharply lower, in line with lower bond prices and the downturn on Wall Street.
