A fall-off in demand from abroad led to a slowing in the rate of growth in manufacturing output and order books in May. However, prices rose faster than ever.

The seasonally-adjusted NCB purchasing managers' index fell to 55.7 from 56.4 in April. A reading above 50 signals growth.
