US clothing manufacturer Levi Strauss announced plans on Tuesday to axe more than 1,500 jobs - a fifth of its European workforce - because of over-capacity caused by declining demand for its jeans and other products.

The company said it had requested discussions with unions on a restructuring programme involving the closure of factories in northern France and Belgium. The French factory employs 530 people and the three Belgian sites have a combined staff of 931.
