ISME, the small and medium-sized firms association, has called on the Government to "expeditiously" draw down the EU support available under the £100 million adjustment fund and to deploy the resources to those companies encountering severe difficulties because of sterling's depreciation.

The fund launched in 1994 "has still not materialised", says ISME.

Many firms are now negotiating contract renewals with their British customers, according to the association.
