Some 54 per cent of Irish Life shareholders opted to take new shares in lieu of their final dividend for 1995/96. As a result, Irish Life issued 2,152,000 new shares to the shareholders who own 23 per cent of the company's shares. The take up of the scrip dividend meant that Irish Life retained £5.44 million out a potential cash dividend payout of £23.87 million.
