Eagle Star has paid £50 million sterling for the Anglo-Dutch owned firm Preferred Direct Insurance. If approved by the authorities, the deal will accelerate the expansion ambitions held by Eagle Star, part of BAT Industries financial services arm which also includes Allied Dunbar. Preferred is owned by UK insurer Friends Provident and Netherlands firm Eureko and is centred mainly on personal motor and household business. - (PA)
