THE Dow Jones industrial average pulled back slightly today after a fleeting, first ever move above the 6000 mark.

Overall, Wall Street stocks were mixed amid some profit taking after Friday's big rally, but the Nasdaq market notched its first new high since early June.

The Dow bobbed above 6000 twice in the first half hour of trading, but then spent the remainder of the session with a small deficit, dropping 13.05 points to close at 5979.81.

Still the move past 6000 punctuated a dramatic 800 point rebound from July's steep sell off, and comes less than a year after the Dow broke the 5,000 mark.

The Standird and Poor 500 rose 0.32 to 701.78, and the NYSE's composite index rose 0.58 to 374.74. The Nasdaq composite index rose 3.00 to 1250.56, and the American Stock Exchange's market value index rose .33 to 582.22.
