Independent Newspapers has reached agreement with SIPTU's Irish Print Group and printing trades branch on pay and working conditions at its proposed new production plant at Citywest in Co Dublin.

Details of payments involved were not released. The agreement includes a voluntary redundancy programme, the reintroduction of five-shift day working and other changes in work practices.

The company said it would strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
