The gap between the price of houses and the cost of building them has widened, according to the Labour spokesperson on the Environment, Mr Eamon Gilmore.

According to Mr Gilmore a huge gap of 93 points between the two represents excess profit for builders, developers and speculators.

He also pointed out that new house prices have risen by 21.9 per cent between September 1998 and the same month in 1999.
