THE Northern Ireland economy continues to outperform other regions of the UK, according to a survey published by Coopers and Lybrand.

A quarterly review of the UK's economic performance by the company suggests that the North is enjoying continued growth compared with the 13 other regions.

Its exports are rising rapidly, although economic growth is not as strong as last year. The unstable political situation is believed to be responsible.

Most regions reported that the construction industry remained in the doldrums, with small businesses in the south east of England also facing difficulties.

Inward investment levels across the UK remained strong. However, the effects of BSE were still a serious problem in the North with farmers, meat processors and those working in ancillary services seriously affected.
