German shares closed sharply tower amid profit taking after recent rallies and continuing uncertainty ahead of the US Federal Reserve meeting on Tuesday. Dealers said the DAX was under pressure ahead of the US central bank meeting and speculation of a US rate increase. Some traders said the market at current levels had now factored in a small increase in US rates.

Paris CAC-40: 2067.09 (-12.37)

French shares fell in line with other share markets on fears that the US Federal Reserve may decide to raise interest rates at the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting today. Brokers said the bourse's fall also reflected profit taking on the last day of the September account, which ended with a 2.29 per cent gain.

Many investors were sidelined ahead of the FOMC meeting as well as a series of important corporate results due this week.
