Bank of Ireland UK is to close nine of its branches in Northern Ireland, but is spending £10 million on refurbishing the other 35 in its network there.

The branches account for about 7 per cent of Bank of Ireland’s business in the North.

The bank said the volume of business at the branches was “insufficient to sustain them”.

Staff affected by the closures will be either redeployed to other roles in the bank or can avail of an existing redundancy package.

The branches will close in May and June.

Sean Sheehan, Bank of Ireland’s regional manager for Northern Ireland, said that the changes would modernise its branch network. “We have to ensure that the network is cost-effective and fit for purpose.”

The branches scheduled for closure are Ballyclare, Ballymoney, Carrickfergus, Kilkeel, Kilrea, Larne, Rathfriland, and Shipquay Street and Waterside in Derry.
