Eircom was the lead bidder for licence A in the auction for the third-generation mobile phone licences in Britain yesterday. The company is offering £421 million sterling for this licence, the most attractive of the five on offer and the only one open to operators who do not already hold second-generation (GSM) licences in Britain. This is the highest amount Eircom has bid for any licence to date.
